Mar Del Plata

This is the nickname given to the city, Mar del Plata. Arriving from the north and the capital of Argentina you will first see the beaches from the cliff tops. The city has around half a million residents, which is augmented during summer by tourists from everywhere. It is a mirror on life in Argentina and reflects many of the fashions within Argentine culture, with the added attraction of some very crowded and lively beaches.

Mardel, as it is often named, is a working city. It started life as a hang out for the rich landowners and the powerful elite at the start of the last century when some of its public buildings were built. However, with the advent of the Peronist revolution and the empowerment of the working classes it became a haven for people from all walks of life. Towards the centre, the beaches are taken over by the young and families who migrate in for their two weeks holiday break from the cities throughout Argentina. In the south of the city the beaches and the lifestyle is aimed more at wealthier sectors of society. Of course, we all mingle happily on the foreshore and walk or ride a bike enjoying the last rays of sunshine in the afternoon, after which the general movement is into the bars, restaurants and clubs, as well as the numerous shops to keep you amused. In fact, the advantage of this place is that even if you have a rainy day, there is still plenty to do and see.

The Casino in Mar del Plata is a famous attraction, and was once the largest in the world. Theatre ranges from the Soho style review show, to well rehearsed dramatic acts which draw in some of the best Argentina actors and some very scantily dressed girls. There is something for everyone, though the more visual shows may be easier to understand as of course unlike the cinema in Argentina all the shows are performed in Spanish. There are many fashion shows and events on the beach. You will find modern cinema complexes and shopping malls. Currently the city is debating building a very big centre on the beachfront. In summer many of the football teams come down and play a summer competition in the stadium. It’s as if Argentina migrates to the coast.
