The End of the World

Highlights • A boat trip through the Beagle Channel. • Trekking through Tierra Del Fuego National Park. • Going to Antarctica. Ushuaia is the last city you pass through on your way to Antarctica (only another 1000km down the road) a 3000km from Buenos Aires. It’s a good overview of Patagonia as it’s possible to see both glaciers and wild life, and also undertake some great treks. There are great sailing trips on the Beagle Channel for a day or more (depending on your budget), and it’s probably the cheapest place in the world to buy last-minute or standby tickets for a boat trip to Antarctica. Typically, these trips go for ten days or more, with prices around US$3,000 – a lot cheaper than booking from the United States where you’ll pay some US$5,000 and more. It’s a bit tacky but we couldn’t help ourselves either. Once you’ve travelled so far south it’s obligatory to make it all official. Just go to the Post Office, The End of the World Museum, the Prison Museum or the National Parks Office to get the Official Government Stamp in you passport which proves to your mates at home that you did actually spend all those hours on a bus getting down here. We were also here in winter and we were stoked. We really thought that there was not much to do so we planned on staying for just a couple weeks. Man, did we get it wrong. We’ve had more fun in Ushuaia during winter than almost any place we’ve travelled in Patagonia... snowmobiles, cross country skiing, riding sleds with huskies, drinking hot wine in the middle of nowhere in knee deep snow after revving up the snowmobiles until they almost smoked out (well, not really, but that’s what it felt like). After four weeks down here we had to push each other to pack our bags and move on. Getting Sorted in Ushuaia • The best Internet café with dozens of computers is Café Net on San Martin 565. They also serve coffee and meals. The Marco Polo Hotel has an affordable coffee/restaurant area where you can hook up your PC to Wi-Fi. • The cinema here in Ushuaia is located right next door to the jail. No throwing of jaffa balls and chewing gum in the cinema…going to jail could ruin your travels.

Alternative tips for Ushuaia | Ushuaia
Most of the 12 hour bus journey from Rio Gallegos passes more or less unremarkably until about 1½ hours before Ushuaia, when I was pleasantly surprised by the impressive changes in landscape. All of a sudden you are surrounded by the mountainous backdrop on all sides that I’d expected from the photos and stories I had heard about Tierra Del Fuego.
